Walls, Ryan and Nowak Soak up Season First Mountain Madness Enduro Wins

Sixty-eight well prepared race cars and trucks turned out for enduro competition on a heavily rain soaked track Sunday at Mountain Speedway, with the third round of the Mountain Madness Enduro Series, presented by ABC Car Crushing and Auto Parts of Hunlock Creek, PA.  Persistent rain showers kept the track surface damp throughout the day and Jeff Walls, Sam Ryan and Kevin Nowak found the fast way to victory at the 1/3-mile oval.

Angelo Spezialetti brought the 6/8-cylinder field to the drop of the green for the 100-lap event.  Upon taking the green, Joe Jentile slapped the front stretch wall on the rain soaked track, yet managed to take the lead.  Only five laps later, Jeff Walls overtook Jentile in his front wheel drive vehicle and began to lap his competition.

The first of three red flags was thrown on lap twenty-one when John Bittoni, Jr. lost a wheel on the backstretch.  At that point in the event, Harry Sager held second, followed by Mark Spencer, Jentile and Bobby Coco.

The top four remained the same at the halfway point in the race and Kevin Nowak moved into fifth, while driving the lone Chevy Blazer in the field.

When lap seventy-two came around, Walls found himself on a lap of his own, as he passed Sager.  Trouble found Sager two laps later, when he and Joe Helberg collected in turns one and two.  Sager was done for the afternoon.

Despite being spun out with a handful of laps remaining, Walls held on for his first victory of the season over Jentile, Nowak, Spencer and Phil Lamonaco.

Pete Verwys, Jr. led the four-cylinder field out of turn four and to the drop of the green in the 100-lap enduro.  Mark Foreman started in the middle of the front row and immediately too command of the event.  Sam Ryan tucked into the second spot, followed by Sig Albarran, Brandon Brown and Vince James.

The best battle for the lead took place between laps ten and forty.  First, Ryan took the lead on lap ten, but lost it to Foreman on the following lap.  Over the next thirty laps, the two diced it up while running side by side almost the entire time.  That’s when Foreman began to slide back.

Ryan still had command halfway through the race and series points leader, Dave Bentley, Jr. moved into second.  Foreman held third with Anthony Pizzo and Larry Spencer completing the top five.

With only twenty-five laps remaining, Foreman headed pit side with a flat tire.  That moved Bob Haeger into the top five.

Ryan remained out front over the remainder of the event and held off a late race charge by Pizzo to notch his first enduro victory of the season.  Pizzo could have won if the race distance was one more lap.  Instead he settled for second.  Bentley finished in the third spot, followed by Robin Schewire and Tony Arcarro.

Spencer and Haeger crossed the finish line fourth and fifth respectively, but were disqualified in post race tech.

Kevin Nowak started from the pole and never looked back, as he cruised to the 25-lap trophy trucks win over Harry Sager, Frank Katona and Richard Petey.

Susan Ryan lapped the entire field to take the 15-lap 6/8-cylinder “ladies only” enduro and Anne Chase held off “The Racing Mom”, Deb Arner to notch the 25-lap “ladies only” four cylinder win.
