With a near
full capacity in the pit area Sunday, many drivers came out to Mountain
Speedway with hopes of success. After post race tech inspection, Shaun
Carrig notched his first sport modified win of the season. Ron Frees
blasted the field and scored his third super stock feature win. Roger
Coss notched his first legends win of the year and Tom Ervin was
victorious in the micro stock main. Sandi Stull notched the bandallero
win.
Rick Zacharias started from the pole position and led the eighteen-car
strong sport modified feature to the drop of the green flag. Things
heated up in a hurry and after two quick cautions, Earl Paules made the
pass for the lead with four laps into the event.
Several more yellows flew and ten laps into the race Paules was still out front over Zacharias, Chas Okerson, Stephen Voorhees and Robert Sutphin. At this point in the event, Shaun Carrig sat in the seventh spot. The caution flew on lap fourteen when Jason Makarewicz spun in turn three. Carrig had a superb restart and bolted from sixth to fourth after getting by Kevin Davison and Voorhees. Another caution waved on lap twenty one when Voorhees, Jason Willet and Charles Kremer II spun in turn two due to oil on the speedway. Unfortunately for Okerson, the fluid was from his vehicle. He was running third at the time and headed to the pits. The entire field of cars was cleared from the speedway to help speed up the extensive track clean up. Paules remained atop the field when green flag racing resumed until a quick caution flew on lap twenty-five. In third at this point, Carrig slipped by Zacharias for second on the restart and tried to reel in Paules over the closing laps. Paules took the checkers first with Carrig in second, but was disqualified afterward in post race tech. Carrig was awarded the victory in the event. Zacharias, Voorhees, Mike Skarbowski and Davison completed the top five. The race, which was originally scheduled for 40-laps was reduced to 30-laps because of time constraints. Stephen Voorhees, Jason Willet and Rick Zacharias were heat race winners. Bill Vanderveen and Ron Frees shared the front row for the start of the 25-lap super stock main event. Vanderveen led the first circuit, but Frees challenged for the lead and took the top spot with one lap in the books. With five laps complete, Frees continues to lead over Vanderveen, John McCormack, Elliot Wohl and Ron Babula. Trouble struck Vanderveen in a big way two laps later. As he near turn one, Vanderveen’s engine expired in a big way. Oil covered the first and second turns and Vanderveen’s day came to a close. The race restarted and Elliot Wohl slipped into the second spot. McCormack held third, followed by Gregg Miranda and Babula. Miranda and Wohl ran side-by-side for second over the closing laps until the two tangled on the front stretch with three circuits remaining. The exchange moved McCormack into second. Frees was unstoppable over the closing laps and went on to score the hat track with his third feature win in a row on the season. McCormack crossed the stripe second followed by Babula, Nick Gargiulo and Jerry Stanzione. John McCormack and Bill Vanderveen were heat race winners. Joey Mattis and Roger Coss shared the front row for the start of the 20-lap legends feature event. Coss grabbed the top spot from the outside of row one. Malcom Campbell got out of shape and cars began to tangle as the field entered turn one. Several drivers were collected, including Derek Hopkinson, Drew Weisser and Pat Johnson. The red flag was displayed for Johnson’s machine, which flipped on to its roof and rode the asphalt into the turn one fence. Johnson exited the car and was not injured. Green flag racing resumed and Coss continued out front. He still led at the halfway mark over Steven Stull, Michael Stull, Matt Maring and Mattis. Hopkinson, who was involved in the lap one incident, began to make a charge through the field. He moved by Mattis and into the fifth spot with six laps remaining. The field encountered lapped traffic and with one lap to go, Joe DeGracia and Michael Stull tangled in turn one. Stull was running third but was unable to continue due to the damage on his race car. Coss held off Stull and took the checkered flag to score his first legends victory of the season. Maring finished third and Hopkinson and Mattis completed the top five. Denny Hiddemen started from the pole and led the first two laps of the 15-lap micro stock feature until Tom Ervin grabbed the top spot. The two waged a terrific battle throughout the course of the event. Hiddemen made several attempts to regain the number one spot, but in the end it was Ervin, who grabbed his second win of the season over Hiddemen, Jim Van Dine, Bill Kreigner, Jr and John Paulsen. Sandi Stull competed in the micro stock feature with her bandallero car. Even though both divisions competed together, Stull was awarded the separate bandallero victory. Sport Modifieds (30-laps) 1.
