With hot
and humid conditions at the track, the racing action heated up even more
Saturday night at Mountain Speedway. Earl Paules grabbed the sport
modified checkered flag and Brian Sones scored his first career win in
the street stocks. Don Adams found victory lane in the TQ midget main
event, as did Nick Ross in the thriller division. Jeff Biegley scored
the 4 cyl. FWD verdict in an exciting feature event.
With Chas Okerson to his outside, Mike Speeney started on the pole in
the 40-lap sport modified feature. Okerson ran the high side of the
race track to take the race lead before the first lap was scored.
Speeney slipped to second with Mike Skarbowski third. Earl Paules moved
to fourth by lap five and Shaun Carrig retained fifth.
Paules disposed of Skarbowski for third on lap nine, and then took
second from Speeney seven circuits later.
The caution flag waved on lap nineteen when Skarbowski and Speeney got
together on the backstretch. Paules wasted no time on the restart and
grabbed the race lead from Okerson.
A string of lap twenty-one cautions took place, one of which included
Speeney, Dan Curtis and Robert Sutphin on the backstretch. Sutphin’s
car sustained quite a bit of damage and he was unable to continue.
Despite a late race charge by Rick Zacharias, Paules took the checkers
for his third win in the division this season. Okerson, Skarbowski and
Carrig completed the top five.
Chas Okerson and Earl Paules were heat race winners.
Rookie street stock driver, Josh Oswald led the division to the drop of
the green flag for the start of the 25-lap feature. Oswald shot out
front and Brad Barbush fell back in to second. Brian Sones grabbed
third and Robert Fink slipped back to fourth after starting on the
outside of the front row.
With two laps complete, Sones began to pressure Brad Barbush for the
runner-up spot. The duo ran side by side for a number of laps until
Brad Barbush slipped up the track and Sones capitalized. Sones then
hunted down Oswald for the race lead, which he got on lap five. Richie
DiMarco moved to third with Todd Barbush close behind in fourth. Brian
Wozniak held fifth.
Brian Wozniak began to battle Todd Barbush for third. The battle began
to shape up for the spot until Todd’s machine spun off of turn two.
Several drivers took evasive action and missed the incident.
Wozniak climbed to second after the restart and Brad Barbush held
third. The trio remained the same and with five laps to go, Ron Babula
and Elliot Wohl held fourth and fifth respectively.
Sones fended off Wozniak to the drop of the checkered flag to claim his
first career win in his third season of competition. Brad Barbush held
on to finish third over Babula. DiMarco out dueled Wohl to finish
fifth.
Josh Oswald and Steve Shultz were heat race winners.
Nick Shaw began the 20-lap thriller feature by starting next to
polesitter, Mike Moyer, Sr. Moyer grabbed the early lead after the drop
of the green, then slipped back a number of spots after getting passed
by Wayne Lowe, Mike Moyer, Jr. and Nick Ross.
The caution flew on lap ten when Shaw spun on the front stretch. Moyer,
Jr. got by Lowe for second and set sail for his father. That was until
Lowe spun to bring out the caution on lap thirteen.
The race restarted and with Ross running third, the action began to heat
up. First, Ross took second from Moyer, Sr. and four laps later he
challenged Moyer, Jr. for the top spot.
After the pass for the lead was sealed, Moyer, Jr. tried to retake it in
turn three. Moyer, Jr. made contact with Ross and spun. After cutting
a tire and sustaining damage from the exchange, Moyer, Jr. headed to the
pits.
Ross remained out front for the rest of the event and took the checkered
flag for his second career win over Shaw, Lowe, Scott Adams and Moyer,
Sr.
Nick Shaw won the heat race.
Ken Kleppinger grabbed the early lead over Eric Banashefski and Jake
Oswald after starting on the pole in the 20-lap 4 cyl. FWD main.
The caution flew on lap four when Oswald got into Banashefski as the two
battled for second.
Jeff Biegley lined up in second and took the lead after the restart.
Only one lap later, Nikki Wachs took control of the race after another
caution waved when Kleppinger spun Biegley in turn two.
Prior to the caution, the pair was running first and second.
Despite restarting from the rear of the field, it didn’t take long for
Biegley to pick his way through the field and contest Wachs for the win.
After a lap eleven restart, Biegley got the jump over Wachs for the lead
and Kleppinger moved by Wachs for second. Biegley held on to take his
second win of the season over Kleppinger, Wachs, Jess McGlynn and Bill
Verwys, Sr.
Ken Kleppinger was the heat race winner.
Twenty-two ATQMRA midget drivers set the field for the start of the
25-lap feature event. Richie Coy and Austin Fehr shared the front row
for what would be the most exciting race of the season at the speedway.
Only six laps in, Paul Lotier, Jr. grabbed the top spot with an inside
maneuver. His lead was short lived, ad Don Adams shot by and into the
lead on lap eight.
Adams continued out front and just before halfway, Lotier held second,
followed by Frank Fischer, Mike Tidoback and Matt Janisch.
Fischer began to kick it up and notch and disposed of Lotier for second
on lap thirteen. One lap later Janisch received a right front flat,
which ended his day after a solid run.
Adams held the point with five laps remaining. Fischer retained second,
followed by Lotier, Lou Cicconi and Ryan Tidman.
Adams held off Fischer to notch his first win of the season in the
caution free feature. Cicconi and Tidman got around Lotier for third
and fourth. Lotier rounded out the top five.
Don Adams, Chris Deritis and Austin Fehr were heat race winners.
ATQMRA News and Notes. During post
race tech inspections the 57 car of "Liquid" Lou Cicconi and the 1B of
Paul Lotier Jr. were found to be too wide across the rear tires leading
to their disqualification. It was unfortunate to see two strong runs go
for naught. Cicconi made an impressive charge from his 16th starting
position to 3rd without the aid of a caution and Lotier would have had
his best finish of the season. NEMA Midget regular Jeremy Frankoski made
his first race of the season with the ATQMRA finishing 9th and winning
the Big wheel Challenge Match race during intermission. Ken Wismer Jr
made his ATQMRA debut in the Joe Csernak F8 moving from his 22nd
starting position to finish 15th.
