Mountain Laurels go to Hoffman, DiMarco, Adams and McGlynn

It’s been some time since Mother Nature allowed Mountain Speedway to get a Saturday night program in the books.  However, that changed for Saturday and the drivers at the 1/3-mile asphalt oval fought for glory in each of the four feature events.  Joe Hoffman notched his first late model win of the year and Scott Adams grabbed the win in the Ed Makarewicz “Duct Tape 50” Memorial thriller event.  Richie DiMarco notched the street stock verdict and Jessica McGlynn scored her first career win in the 4 cyl. FWD division.

Joe Hoffman led a fifteen strong late model field to the drop of the green flag in the 30-lap feature.  When the green flag dropped, Brian DeFebo, who started second on the grid wasted no time while trying to take the lead.

The first of several cautions waved when Travis Fisher got into Ricky Ross, Jr. in turn three.  Fisher exited the speedway, and then returned after quick pit crew work.

Hoffman led over DeFebo, Tony Volpe, Paul Koehler, Jr. and Jim Lamoreaux on lap seven, then the caution was displayed a lap later when Mike Sweeney fell off the pace and stopped on the speedway.

The field bottled up after the restart and several drivers were collected on the backstretch, including DeFebo, Joe Brown and Glenn Heckman.  DeFebo’s car sustained the worst damage and he was unable to continue.

Volpe restarted second to Hoffman and challenged for the top spot on several occasions after the restart.  Lamoreaux held third, Koehler was fourth and Fisher fifth.

With a handful of laps remaining, Lamoreaux ran out of real estate while trying to pass Volpe for second.  The end result was a spinning Lamoreaux in turn three and four, followed by the yellow flag.

Hoffman had no problems over the final laps and scored his first victory of the season over Volpe, Koehler, Fisher and Radocha.

“It’s been a while”, said Hoffman (Drums, PA) regarding his first win of the season.  “I have to really thank my crew.  “They’ve spent a lot of time on the car the last few weeks”.  “Also, both Volpe and DeFebo raced me really clean up front”, he said.

Joe Hoffman and Brian DeFebo were heat race winners.

Mike Moyer, Sr. brought the sixteen thriller starters down to the drop of the green flag in the 50-lap Ed Makarewicz Memorial.  The “Duct Tape 50” event featured sponsored laps from fellow drivers, fans and other supporters.

Moyer shot into the early lead over Wayne Lowe and Mike Moyer, Jr.  Already a four-time winner heading into the event, Scott Adams started seventh and moved into fourth by lap two.

The first of six cautions came out when Marissa Makarewicz and Howie Bott tangled on the backstretch.  Makarewicz hit the pits for repairs, and then rejoined the field for the restart.

Adams moved into second after the restart, and then grabbed the top spot from Mike Moyer, Sr. on lap ten.

The second yellow waved on lap eleven.  Just before the restart, Mike Moyer, Sr., who was running second, pulled out of the racing groove due to a flat tire.  Moyer hit the pits and rejoined the field after a great run early on.

Adams held the lead until lap twenty-one.  That’s when Nick Shaw worked his way into the lead with a turn three pass.  Lowe followed through to take second.
The top two remained the same and with thirty-five laps complete, Bott held third, followed by Nick Ross and Adams.  That changed a couple of circuits later.

Lowe attempted to grab the top spot from Shaw in turn two.  The duo tangled and Shaw was spun from contention, which gave Bott the lead.

Bott held the point at lap thirty-seven with Ross and Adams in pursuit.  Adams disposed of Ross and began to chase down Bott.

With three laps remaining, Adams grabbed the lead and drove off to his sixth win of the season over Bott, Ross, Richard Petey and Mike Moyer, Sr.

Mike Moyer, Sr. and Mike Moyer, Jr. were heat race winners.

The 25-lap street stock feature began with Elliot Wohl and Steve Shultz on the front row.  After only three laps, Brian Sones moved into third with Richie DiMarco and Scott Meckes rounding out the top five.

Sones appeared to be the car to beat, as he took command of the event two laps later.  DiMarco moved into second and Wohl dropped to third.

A pair of lap eight cautions slowed the event.  One of which, DiMarco barely took the lead from Sones after the restart.

The worst one flew on lap nine when Chip Wanamaker slowed due to a flat tire.  Brian Wozniak had nowhere to go and ran into Wanamaker, which ended his day.

The last caution flew when Sones spun in turns three and four.  After a solid second place effort, Sones picked up the tail end of the field.

Meckes shot by Wohl for second when green flag racing resumed, but could not chase down DiMarco, who notched his second feature win of the season.

Meckes settled for second.  Wohl, Brad Barbush and Eric Danyluk completed the top five.

Chip Wanamaker and Richie DiMarco were heat race winners.

Jessica McGlynn and Ken Kleppinger shared the front row for the start the 20-lap 4 cyl. FWD feature.  McGlynn got out to a sizable lead over Kleppinger when the green flag flew and Jeff Biegley moved to third.

Kleppinger began to narrow the gap after midway through the event.  Nikki Wachs moved into the fourth spot, followed by Bill Verwys, Sr.

Kleppinger tried several maneuvers to try and gain the advantage over McGlynn, but the attempts failed and McGlynn pulled off her first career victory.  Kleppinger settled for second in the caution free event, followed by Biegley, Wachs and Verwys.

McGlynn couldn’t believe that she earned her first career win.  “I just won a race!” she said before climbing out of her car in victory lane.
