Rusty Smith Edges Kyle Ebersole to Mountain Speedway Checkers
By: Gene Ostrowski

28, 2008
Rusty Smith of Oxford, NY held off Kyle Ebersole to score his second
regular modified feature win of the season Saturday at Mountain
Speedway. Ryan Tidman edged Zack Martini to the checkers in the ATQMRA
midget main event and Richie DiMarco beat Steve Shultz en route to his
third street stock victory of the season. Nick Ross notched his third
thriller win of the year and Ken Kleppinger notched his first career
victory in the caution-free 4 Cyl. FWD division show.
Tommy Wanick III grabbed the early lead over Barry Callavini and led the
early laps of the 40-lap modified feature. With ten laps complete,
Wanick remained out front and was pressured by Kyle Ebersole for the top
spot.
Ebersole attempted to pass Wanick on several occasions and was
unsuccessful. That is, until lap seventeen.
Ebersole ran second with Rusty Smith third. Ebersole attempted an
outside pass on Wanick and Smith, who started eighth, joined the mix
entering turn one. Smith drover underneath both drivers on grabbed the
top spot. Ebersole followed through and into second.
The red
flag flew when Billy Weichart’s car slid through the infield and broad
sided Kevin Green, the official track photographer. Ambulance crews
responded on the scene immediately, and then Kevin was flown to the
Lehigh Valley Medical Center in Allentown. Although he needed a number
of stitches, Green’s condition appeared to be well at press time after a
scary incident.
Ebersole tried everything in his power to hang with Smith when green
flag racing resumed. Unable to gain the top spot, Ebersole settled for
second and Smith began the first driver to score two wins this season in
the regular Mountain modifieds.
After a long and hot race, Smith exited his car and his first concern
was for Kevin Green. “Let’s all keep Kevin in out thoughts and prayers,
that was a very unfortunate incident”, said Smith.
He continued and complimented Ebersole on such a great run. “Kyle had a
great run to finish second”, he said. “I believe that’s his best
finish.
It was indeed.
Ebersole was happy with the runner-up finish, but still awaits his first
career-modified victory. “It was a good run for us”, he said. “The car
just started going away toward the end. “I didn’t have anything for
Rusty”.
Callavini finished in the third spot, followed by Wanick and Pete
Brittain.
It was Dave’s Delaware Valley Towing night for the American Three
Quarter Midget Association and Zach Martini led the first four laps of
the 25-lap feature event before Ryan Tidman overtook him.
The last of four caution flags flew when Robin Johnston and Tim Behmar
made contact in turn two. Chris Deritis was also collected.
Martini wasted no time on the restart as he powered back into the lead.
Tidman fell to second with Don Adams, Lou Cicconi and Richie Coy in tow.
The top two drivers fought tooth and nail over the closing laps and
Tidman regained the top spot with three laps remaining in the event.
Tidman was unchallenged and picked up his second Mountain win of the
season over Martini, Adams, Cicconi and Johnston.
Steve Shultz started from the pole in the 25-lap street stock feature
event. With two laps complete, Chip Wanamaker worked his way into
second after getting by Brian Wozniak.
Shultz continued out front, as Richie DiMarco began to work his way into
the top three after starting sixth.
Just past halfway, DiMarco and Wanamaker battled heavily for the second
spot. The two ran side-by-side for several laps before DiMarco gained
the advantage and moved into second.
DiMarco caught and passes Shultz with seven laps remaining and drove off
to his third win of the season.
The final caution of the race flew on the final lap, as the leaders were
to take the checkered flag. The finish of the street stock race was
unofficial at press time, but Shultz was scored in second with Wanamaker
third. Scott Meckes, who started fourteenth, and Wozniak completed the
top five. Update- Track officials decided to call the event after
24 laps of racing, which was a good call. The official finish is
posted below.
Nick Ross grabbed the lead in the 20-lap thriller feature after the drop
of the green flag. The young rookie of the year contender out dueled
Scott Adams to take his third feature win of the season. Wayne Lowe,
Jimmy White, Jr. and Nick Shaw completed the top five.
Ken Kleppinger started from the pole in the 20-lap 4 Cyl. FWD main event
and led every lap to score his first career feature win. Jeff Biegley
finished second. Jess McGlynn, Bill Verwys, Sr. and Eric Banashefski
rounded out the top five.
