Ricky Ross, Chip Wanamaker, Steve Stull and Nick Ross Notch Mountain Feature WinsRoss Brothers Race Their Way Into the Speedway’s History BooksBy: Gene Ostrowski July 19, 2008 For what is believed to be the first time during the “new era”, a set of brothers have won features in their respective divisions Saturday night at Mountain Speedway. Ricky Ross, Jr. notched his first career late model feature win and his brother Nick took the checkers in the thriller main event. Chip Wanamaker grabbed the street stock win and Steve Stull was victorious in the legend car feature. The double-points, 50-lap late model feature began with Mike Radocha, Jr. grabbling the lead from pole sitter, Frank Hughes. Without a complete lap scored, the caution flag flew when Joe Brown spun in turn one. Also collected were Dan Berlitz and Augie Hahn. Again, Radocha shot to the lead. Ricky Ross, Jr. of Mountaintop, PA restarted behind Radocha and slipped into the second spot. Three laps passed by and Ross worked underneath Radocha and into the lead with the front stretch pass. With seven laps down, Tony Volpe held second, followed by Tom Spencer and Joe Hoffman. Another caution waved on lap thirty-one when Mike Sweeney spun in turns three and four while battling for the third spot with Spencer. Sweeney rejoined the tail end of the field and began to make a surge back toward the front. Ross remained out front and Volpe continued to knock on his back door. Volpe got the chance that he needed to take the lead after a lap forty-one restart. With only nine laps remaining, Ross’ car drifted up the speedway in turn three. Volpe capitalized on the opportunity, but the caution flag flew for a Hughes spin in turn two. It was just before the leaders came back to the stripe. The exchange forced a complete restart and Volpe’s hopes of victory faded. A rookie in his division, Ross opened up a sizable advantage over the closing laps to pick up his first career late model win. Volpe and Hoffman battled to the finish for second, with Volpe grabbing the spot by a bumper. Sweeney and Spencer completed the top five. Tony Volpe and Ricky Ross, Jr. were heat race winners. Scott Meckes started from the pole in the 25-lap street stock feature. It took less than a lap for Chip Wanamaker to power from his third starting spot and into the race lead. The first of six caution flags flew on lap nine when fourth place runner, Elliott Wohl broke an axel in turn three. Wanamaker continued out front for the restart, followed by Meckes, Norman Barnes, Eric Danyluk and Richie DiMarco. Danyluk was on a mission and worked his way by Barnes, then overtook Meckes for second on lap nineteen. Wanamaker drove to his third feature win of the season. With laps winding down, Danyluk tried everything he had to overtake the leader, but had to settle for second in the end. Brad Kline mad a late race charge to finish in the third spot. DiMarco and Barnes completed the top five. Chip Wanamaker and Brad Kline were heat race winners. Nick Shaw led the first nine circuits before Nick Ross took command in the 30-lap, double-points thriller main event. Shaw continued to run second at halfway, followed by Mike Moyer, Sr., Scott Adams and Mike Moyer, Jr. Adams moved around Shaw for the second spot, but didn’t have enough time, or laps to catch Ross in the caution-free event. The win was Ross’ fourth of his rookie season. Shaw settled for second, followed by Moyer, Jr. and Paul Morgan, Jr. Steve Stull and Derek Hopkinson shared the front row for the start of the 20-lap legends main. Stull shot out front when the green flag flew. After four laps of racing, Steve Stull continued at the point with Mike Stull, Mike Gervais, Hopkinson and Roger Coss in tow. Gervais worked around Mike Stull for second on lap five, then by Steve Stull for the race lead on the following circuit. Coss and Mike Stull battled for the third spot. The two bumped while racing hard for the spot and Mike Stull spun in turn four. Once the race restarted, Mike Stull began to blister off laps and make his way back toward the top five. The final caution flew when Karl Heisler spun in turn four. With only two laps remaining, Steve Stull overtook Gervais on the restart and never looked back as he took his first Mountain legends win of the season. Gervais finished as the runner-up, followed by Coss, Hopkinson and Mike Stull. Mike Stull, Mike Gervais and Derek Hopkinson were heat race winners.
