Tony Volpe Victorious in Mountain’s 50-lap Late Model Main

It’s been an entire season since Tony Volpe visited victory lane in his late model.  That changed Saturday night at Mountain Speedway when Volpe held off Joe Brown to earn the double points 50-lap event.  Anthony Sesely held off Zane Zeiner to earn his first sport modified win of the season and Steve Clark earned his first street stock win since 1995.  Mike Moyer, Jr. notched his second thriller victory of the season Don Adams grabbed the checkers in the TQ midget main event.

With double points on the line in the 50-lap late model main event, things were bound to get exciting.

Joe Brown led the field to the drop of the green flag, but the caution quickly flew when Mike Radocha, Jr. pounded the front stretch wall after taking the green flag.  Several other drivers were involved, including Frank Hughes, Joe Hoffman and Kenny Alfano.  After quick pit repair, Hoffman and Alfano returned to the event.

Mike Sweeney overtook Brown for the race lead on lap thirteen, then Zeiner moved into the second spot.  With fifteen laps complete, Brown retained third, followed by Jim Lamoreaux and Tony Volpe.

Hoffman worked his way back into the top five.  While challenging for third, Hoffman made contact with Brown, which brought out a yellow on lap twenty.  Both drivers were forced to the back of the field for the restart.

Sweeney remained out front until Zeiner got underneath him on lap forty-one.  The two touched while racing through turns three and four and the contact caused Sweeney to spin.  Zeiner had a loose bumper cover, but managed to shake it off before being forced to the pits.

Green flag racing resumed and Volpe was second, followed by Brown, Ricky Ross, Jr. and Hoffman.  Volpe began to apply pressure to Zeiner and challenged for the race lead on multiple occasions.

His perseverance paid off and Volpe got under Zeiner in turn two.  Unfortunately, due to not having a bumper cover, the exposed bars caught Volpe’s machine and the duo became tangled for an instant.  Zeiner spun and many drivers took evasive action as the caution flag waved.

Despite several attempts by Brown, Volpe went on to take the checkers to score his first victory of the season.  Brown finished second, followed by Sweeney, Dan Turbush and Lamoreaux.

Sixteen sport modifieds took the green flag in the 30-lap feature race.  After starting on the pole, Anthony Sesely jumped out into the early lead.

The first caution flew when Rick Zacharias spun off of turn two.  Scott Riggleman, who was unable to avoid the incident, was collected.  Both drivers retired from the event.

Zane Zeiner grabbed a few positions after the restart.  First he powered by Kevin Davison for third.  Next, he cruised underneath Shaun Carrig for second.  Shortly after, Jason Hearne worked into the third spot.

Zeiner tried to take the race lead on multiple occasions, but had to settle for second.  Sesely took his first Mountain Speedway victory over, Zeiner, Hearne, Davison and Carrig.

After winning his heat race, Steve Clark led the street stock field to the drop of the green flag from the pole position.  Clark held the lead early, followed by Elliott Wohl, Brian Sones, Brad Barbush and Richie DiMarco.

Wohl was within striking distance of Clark, but his day came to an end on lap seventeen when his engine expired.
Following the restart, DiMarco moved into second and Brian Wozniak followed suit in third.  Chip Wanamaker joined the top five.

With only two laps remaining, Wozniak, who evidently had problems with the rear of his car, lost a wheel and did three 360s before coming to a rest in turns one and two.

Clark held off DiMarco on the last restart and went on to score his thirty-second overall and first win at the speedway since 1995.

After starting from the pole, Nick Shaw held the early lead in the 20-lap thriller feature.  With two laps in the books, Bob Wink was scored in second, followed by Mike Moyer, Jr, Nick Ross and Paul Morgan, Jr.

Moyer worked by Wink for second and set his sights on Shaw.  After reeling in the leader, Moyer grabbed the top spot on lap thirteen.  Ross grabbed the second spot shortly after.

After finishing second to his father last week, Moyer drove off to earn his second victory of the season over Ross, Shaw, Wayne Lowe and Scott Adams.

Twenty cars were on hand and took the green flag in the 20-lap TQ midget main event.  Matt Janisch grabbed the lead from polesitter, Alison Cumens.

The first of five caution flags waved two laps in when Scott Campbell, Chris Deritis and Mike Tidaback collected off of turn four.

Green flag racing resumed and Janisch held the top spot.  Don Adams moved into second by lap five, with Frank Fischer, Jeff Kot and Paul Lotier, Jr. close behind.

The yellow flew again, as Kot clipped the apron in turn four, then shot across the track, taking out Deritis, Tidman, Alison Cumens and Tim Procter in the process.  Tidman received the worst damage and his torn up machine was loaded into the back of a pick-up and taken into the pit area.  Along with Kot, Deritis was also done for the evening.

Janisch appeared to have the victory sealed, but bad luck struck the driver with six laps remaining.  Something broke on the front end of his machine while he entered turn three.  Without much control, Janisch shot into the retaining fence.  This moved Adams into the lead.

Adams cruised on and took the victory over Fischer, Zach Martini, Austin Fehr and Lotier.
