Mountain
Speedway’s Super Bowl of motorsports is approaching. Like the former
Turkey Derby in November, the annual “King of the Mountain” at Mountain
Speedway tends to bring out the “who’s who” in short track racing, and
the 9th annual event will host a record nine divisions over
the course of the weekend.
Different
than what has been done in the past, this year’s show will not mandate
that drivers qualify on Saturday, then run their feature on Sunday. In
fact, each division will qualify and if so, run the feature on the same
day.
The weekend will kick off at the 1/3-mile asphalt oval near Hazleton, PA
on Friday, September 26th with open practice for all
divisions from 6-9 PM. Pit pass will cost $20 for the evening and
grandstand admission is free.
The late models, street stocks, sport mods, legends and TQ midgets will
run heat races and extended lap main events on Saturday, September 27.
Heat race qualifiers will begin at 1 PM. The afternoon will be capped
off with a 75-lap sport modified main event.
The speedway is planning to host a pit party when racing concludes
Saturday night. Anyone who is interested an attending and plans to
bring food or drink, is asked to call Debbie Heintzelman at
570-501-1903.
Four big features will showcase the racing on Sunday, September 28.
Following a “happy hour” style practice for the tour type modifieds,
heat races will be run for the FWD, thrillers and super stock
divisions. Following the heat races, the full-blown modifieds will take
the stage by running time trials. After running of the main events, the
evening will be capped off with a $4000 to win, 150-lap main event for
the modifieds. All of Sunday’s action will begin at 3 PM.
Feature winners of each of the two modified mains will receive
guaranteed starting spots in the seasons North-South Shootout.
All entrants will draw for heat race starting positions on race day.
Twenty cars will start feature events through heat races and time trials
will be held for the modifieds on Sunday. If needed, consi races will
be run.
The top ten
in driver points for all Mountain Speedway divisions after the September
14th program will be added to the feature as a provisional, provided
they do not qualify through heat races, time trials or consi events.
The drivers must attempt to qualify in both, heat (time trials for mods)
and consi in order to be eligible for a provisional spot.
A pit pass
for Saturday or Sunday is $40 and there is no weekend pass. The car
registration fee does not include the driver. Grandstand admission fee
is $25 for ages 11 and up on Saturday and $25 for ages 11 and up on
Sunday. As always, children 10 years of age and younger are admitted
for free.
In case of inadequate weather, the speedway has set the following
weekend aside to use as a make-up date.
