Brown, Verwys and Sager Spring to Mountain Madness
Victories
By Gene Ostrowski
Round #2 of the 2008 “Mountain Madness” Enduro Series
kicked off Saturday at Mountain Speedway. Over
seventy-five racers from across the Northeast took
advantage of the Spring-like weather to showcase their
endurance while being behind the wheel of a race car.
By the end of the afternoon, Pat Verwys, Ed Brown, Jr.
and Harry Sager all visited victory lane as division
race winners.
Bob Haeger led the first four circuits of the 100-lap
four-cylinder event before Robin Schewire took control
of the race. The two swapped the top spot on several
occasions with Pat Verwys, Anthony Pizzo, and Duane
Garrison in pursuit of the leaders.
Verwys grabbed the lead on lap sixteen, but Schewire
wouldn’t give up easily, as the duo exchanged the top
position four times over the next twenty circuits.
The second of four red flags flew when Danielle Allen
and Schewire got together on the front stretch.
Schewire was able to continue, but Allen’s car sustained
heavy front-end damage and remained on the speedway.
Green flag racing resumed and Verwys continued in
command at the halfway mark over Pizzo, Sam Ryan,
Schewire and Dave Bentley.
The top ten jostled positions throughout the rest of the
event, but Verwys remained untouched and cruised to his
first win in over two years. Bentley raced up to
second, followed by Ryan, Pizzo and Joe Grocholski.
In victory lane, Verwys thanked his brother, Bill, for
letting him drive to victory in his car.
From the pole, Rich Moyer shot out front in the 100-lap
6/8-cylinder event, but it didn’t take long until Ed
Brown, Jr overtook him. By lap ten, Joe Jentile fought
around TJ Kapish, Brian Brown and Frank Reakes to take
second.
With nineteen laps completed, Jentile soared into the
lead and appeared to have full control of the field, but
that was until he experienced a flat tire on lap
thirty-nine. A pit stop by Jentile moved Brown back to
the front.
Mark Spencer drove to second and by mid race he was
pressured by Shawn Gallucci, TJ Kapish and Jeff Walls.
Meanwhile, Danny Grennan and Phil Lomonaco began to make
their presence known, entering the top ten.
With lapped traffic as a factor, and with two laps
remaining, Spencer reeled in Brown and the two dueled
side-by-side. Brown held off Spencer for his first
Mountain Madness enduro victory by a mere car-length.
Walls, Gallucci and Kapish completed the top five.
Brown thanked his friends and competitors in victory
lane after pocketing over $700 for his fist win.
A handful of “Trophy Trucks” were on hand for a quick
25-lap enduro. Harry Sager grabbed the lead from pole
sitter, Mariah Lawrence at the drop of the green flag.
By mid race and with a half lap lead, it appeared that
Sager would easily win the contest over Woot Lawrence,
Kevin Nowak and Jim White. However, Lawrence began to
reel in the leader. Lawrence closed even more during
the closing laps, but not enough to let Sager know that
he was there.
With his victory, Sager is now batting 100 after winning
the first two enduros of the season and thanked his
wife, Nikki Sager (Wachs). The two were married three
weeks ago.
