Jentile, Ryan and Gregor Score “Frostbite” Victories at Mountain
Speedway
By: Gene Ostrowski
January 3, 2009
Winter temperatures didn’t discourage drivers from taking the green flag
in the ABC Car Crushing Mountain Madness Enduro Series “Frostbite”
enduros Saturday at Mountain Speedway. Despite a late race spin, Joe
Jentile took top honors in the 6/8-cylinder division. In dominating
fashion, Sam Ryan took the 4-cylinder checkers and Jeff Gregor made a
late race charge to challenge for the win in trophy truck action.
Before being overtaken by Rich Paciotti, Elliot Wohl started from the
pole and led the first circuit in the 100-lap 6/8-cylinder enduro. Bob
Wink slipped into the third spot with Steve Tito and James Presley in
tow.
Wink quickly worked toward the front of the pack and drove into the top
spot with five laps complete. However, Presley followed Wink through
traffic and worked him over for the race lead five laps later.
With
twenty-one laps in the books, Presley led over Wink, Joe Jentile, Woot
Lawrence and Tom Szoke. Known as a threat to win in any enduro, Jentile
took the race lead six laps later.
It appeared that Jentile had the win in the bag, but he was spun in
turns three and four with a few laps remaining. Jentile was able to get
his car pointed in the right direction but the gap between himself and
Wink dwindled.
Wink overtook Jentile for a moment on lap ninety-seven but his lead was
short-lived, as Jentile regain it in lapped traffic. The two ran
side-by-side and when the checkered flag flew, it was Jentile
(Bedminster, PA) taking the win. Wink settled for second, followed by
Lawrence, Bob Haeger and Robin Schewire.
Brian Brown led the four cylinders to the drop of the green flag in the
100-lap enduro. Before a single lap was scored, Mike Mujsce took the
race lead. With four laps complete, Mujsce led over Bobby Coco, Sam
Ryan and Jake Oswald.
Ryan caught Mujsce and took the race lead on lap seventeen, and then the
two swapped the top spot four times over the next twenty-five laps.
Ryan held the race lead at halfway followed by Mujsce, Brown, Bill
Price, Jr. and John Saccomandi.
Ryan (White Haven, PA) set a blistering pace and lapped all but one car
en route to victory. Mujsce finished second and Saccomandi, Price and
Mark Foreman completed the top five.
Wayne Meyer started from the pole position in the 40-lap trophy truck
enduro. Before a lap was complete, Kevin Orlando took control of the
event from his second starting spot.
Only one lap later, Frank Katona took his turn out front and then Jeff
Gregor took command six laps later.
Kevin Nowak began to reel in Gregor. After the two exchanged the top
spot, the two made contact while racing out of turn two on lap twelve.
Gregor spun and Nowak took the race lead.
Just before halfway Nowak continued to lead over Katona, Donny Oliver,
Gregor and Meyer.
Knowing he had a truck that could win, Gregor (Bridgehampton, NY) put on
a late race run and overtook Nowak for the race lead on lap
thirty-four. He went on to take the checkered flag over Nowak, Katona,
Meyer and Oliver.
One dollar from each general admission was donated to
the Fraternal Order of Police-Christina lodge
#84.
