Zane Zeiner Repeats Sport Modified and
INEX Legends Victories
By Amanda Suhoski
June 14, 2009
The
strong storms that moved through the North Eastern
Pennsylvania area on Saturday caused the management at
Sundance Vacations Speedway to cancel the Saturday
evening show. Unlike many other tracks, Sundance
Vacations Speedway has a back up plan. In the event a
Saturday show is cancelled, the show will take place the
following day. The weather could not have been better
for a racing day.
The
4 cylinder FWD, Street Stocks, Sport Modifieds, Legends,
and a 40 lap “dash for cash” Small Car Enduro were on
hand for today’s event.
The
Legends were up first for their twenty lap main event.
Scott Hubler and Zane Zeiner made up the front row after
Raven Schrantz elected to start in the rear. Hubler and
Zeiner battled for the lead, it was Hubler who came out
on top, while Zeiner had his hands full with Mike Alcaro
who took over second place on lap three. Zeiner not
settling for third, put his number 76 up next to the 88
of Alcaro completing the pass for second on lap eight
and then passing Hubler for the lead on lap nine. He
never looked back and went on to win the feature.
Hubler, Alcaro, Grimm, and Schrantz completed the rest
of the field.
The
4 cylinder FWD cars were out next. Jake Oswald started
on the pole with Brian Kunkle on the outside. When the
green flag dropped , Kunkle jumped out in the lead with
Kleppinger following him closely in second, Oswald
dropped back to third. Just as lap one was completed the
caution flag flew for an incident in between turns one
and two for Chris Toole and Mike Kline getting together.
When the green came back out it was Kleppinger who had
the faster car and took over the top spot. A fast moving
Robert Fink moved into third place by lap four, second
by lap six, and into the lead on lap ten. The caution
flag flew once again, this time for Jake Oswald stopping
on the raceway with a flat tire. Racing resumed this
time Fink was up against Jon Smith, by lap twelve Smith
took over the top spot, but not for long, four laps
later Fink regained the lead and went on to win the
race. Smith finished in second, Kleppinger, Pete Verwys,
and Brian Kunkle finished out the top five.
Jeff
McGrath and Mike Schadder made up the front row of the
Street Stock main event. When the green flag came out it
was third place runner Steve Hoffman who jumped out into
the lead. Chip Wanamaker was on the move, coming from
his ninth starting position, he had moved into third
place behind Schadder, and battling for second by lap 6.
The racing intensified as lap 9 was completed, Wanamaker
and Schadder came together bringing out the yellow flag.
On the restart Hoffman had his hands full with Steve
Schultz starting along side of him. Schultz took the
lead and by lap eleven, Dan Cascioli moved into second.
Two laps later the yellow was back out, this time it was
for Josh Oswald spinning on the back stretch. The green
was back out and Schultz remained out front, however on
lap sixteen the caution flag waived once again, this
time for Darryl Schwartz, Frank Katona, and Tony
Hilliard getting together in turns three and four. The
green was back out, but again, the caution flag waived,
this time before lap seventeen could be completed Robert
Fink, Brian Wozniak, and Steve Hoffman getting together
in turn one. The green was quick to come back out,
however the caution would come out for the final time
for Frank Katona who spun on the backstretch . Steve
Schultz would go on to win the race, while Dan Casioli,
Brad Barbush, Joe Barbush, and John Stonier would
complete the top five.
As
Steve Schultz celebrated his feature win, the Sport
Modifieds lined up in the staging area. Patrick Verwys
and Frank Reakes started on the front row. Reakes took
the lead over but before the lap could be completed Mike
Mangini spun on the backstretch.. Only three laps would
go under green before the next two caution flags would
fly, the first one was for Joe Wielgosz spinning in turn
two and then Mike Mangini in between turns three and
four. Reakes remained out front trying to win his first
feature in a Sport Modified, but by lap four when the
caution flag flew, it would be for Reakes, who was
assisted in spinning by Jason Hearne. The incident
collected Earl Paules whose day was ended due to the
damage. This leaving Scott Adams in the lead, but two
laps later, Mike Skarbowski took the lead. Once again,
the caution flag flew, this time for Jason Hearne on lap
seven. The green was back out, Skarbowski remained in
the lead while the battle for second was heating up
between Rusty Smith, Scott Adams, and Zane Zeiner. On
lap ten, they battled three wide going into turn one and
ran out of racing room, the incident put all three to
the rear of the field. The next lap racing would halt
once again, this time it was for Bob Ankner stopping on
the front stretch. Skarbowski remained in charge, as
Zane Zeiner, was moving through the field fast. He was
in fourth by lap sixteen and made a daring move to go
three wide with Paul Frantz and Barry Callavini to take
over second. On lap 23 Zane would take over the lead.
The caution flag flew a few more times before the race
would be over. However, the cautions weren’t enough to
stop Zane Zeiner from collecting his second checkered
flag for the day. Skarbowski finished second, followed
by Rusty Smith, Jason Hearne, and Frank Reakes.
The
forty lap Small Car Enduro would finish out the day of
racing. Harry Sagar was quick to be out front. Hard
charges from Pete Verwys carried on through out the
forty laps. As it appeared Sagar would go on to win,
Pete Verwys pulled up next to him to take the lead on
lap thirty-five and would go on to win. Sagar, Bill
Price, Robert Fink, and Bill Rice would finish out the
top five.
Jon
Smith and Robert Fink picked up heat wins in the 4
cylinder FWD. Steve Hoffman, Joe Barbush, and Brian
grabbed the heat wins for the Street Stocks. Pat Verwys,
Earl Paules, and Zane Zeiner won their heats in the
Sport Modifieds.
