“Duct Tape” 50 Ed Makarewicz, Sr. Memorial- The Most Prestigious Factory Stock Event at Sundance

For the last three seasons, Mac Brother’s Racing held the biggest race of the year for the Factory Stock division at Sundance Vacations Speedway. This year is no different and the cars are ready to roll for the 4th annual “Duct Tape 50” Ed Makarewicz, Sr. Memorial. The annual event is to remember and honor Makarewicz, who passed on in November, 2005.

At age 59, Makarewicz was taken from his family and friends and his calling to a better place left his sons; Jason, Kevin and Ed Makarewicz, Jr. and his wife; Francis Makarewicz heartbroken. However, the family kept it together and as a true racing family the decided to hold an annual event to remember dad.
After stepping out of the drivers seat and into the car owner role, Jason Makarewicz remembered what his father thought when he decided to jump behind the wheel of a late model a number of years ago. “Our dad was always into racing, even more when the big blocks ran at Evergreen (Sundance Vacations Speedway).  Several years ago when I wanted to go racing, our dad said I was out of my mind and that he would never help with the car.  Wouldn’t ya know he was out in the garage every day? He couldn’t keep his hands off of it.  Every week he was out at the track as well”, he said.

Danny Cascioli won the inaugural “Duct Tape 50” over Ricky Ross, Jr.  The event hosted the most Factory Stock cars (23) that night than during any other night of regular action.  Along with the competition, there were only two cautions during the event, which by far made it the cleanest race of the season. Instead of tears throughout the grandstands, the Mac camp made sure that every child in attendance had a blast as many reflected on the life of the family’s hero. Filled with candy, a piņata was set up for the kids and give-a-ways were also plentiful.

The following season featured sophomore standout, Ricky Ross, Jr. as he took the prestigious event en route to the division title. Ross still competes at the speedway, as he has since moved into the Sport Modified division.

Scott Adams won the big prize last season and although he has since moved into the Sport Modified division, he will be back in his Factory Stock to support the event and try to be the first two-time winner of the annual show.
Even though the Mac Brother’s Racing team aren’t running for points this season, you can bet that their family and friends will make the call for the special race.

Many of Makarewicz’s friends, family members and competitors, along with others have donated lap money for the big race as well. The lap money will be split among drivers throughout the field for each sponsored lap. There are also other awards and prizes that will be distributed.

Regardless of the outcome, they all know that “Duct Tape” Dad is right by their side and will continue to be there lap after lap, even when life calls for an unscheduled pit stop.
