Zane Zeiner Blasts to Fourth Sundance
Sport Modified Victory
By: Gene Ostrowski
August 8, 2009
With
a packed pit area on Saturday, Sundance Vacations Speedway held a
full card of racing, which included make up features from a rain
shortened show on July 25. Zane Zeiner overtook Scott Adams and
drove off to his fourth win in the Sport Modifieds and Brad Barbush
completed a last lap pass on Steve Clark to take the win in the
50-lap Street Stock make up main. Robert Fink and Jon Smith shared
wins in FWD action, as did Scott Hubler and Zane Zeiner in INEX
Legends action. Members from the Garden State Vintage Stock Car Club
were also on hand with their refurbished race cars and Bob Barker
went on to victory in the exhibition event.
Frank Reakes led the Sport Modified field to the drop of the green
flag in to 40-lap main event. With one lap complete, Reakes led over
Joe Wielgosz, Harry Schaefer, Beryle Herman and Ricky Ross, Jr.
The caution flag flew when something broke on Paul Frantz’s car as
he headed into turn one on lap five. Green flag racing resumed and
from his fifth position on the restart, Scott Adams began to climb
toward the front as he overtook Ross, Schaefer and Wielgosz and
moved into second.
Adams cleared Reakes for the lead on lap eight and then the caution
flew a lap later when Bob Wilson got out of shape in turn four.
Wilson shot across the race track and collected several cars, which
included Barry Callavini, Jason Hearne and Scott Brannick.
After starting 14th, Zane Zeiner entered the top five by
lap 13. Brian DeFebo, who started in the 15th spot
followed closely behind.
Adams continued out from over Ricky Ross, Jr. and meanwhile, Zeiner
climbed into the third spot and began to pressure Ricky Ross, Jr.
Zeiner completed the pass for the runner up spot on lap 19. DeFebo,
who was running on the fourth spot at the time, was eliminated from
competition on lap 21 with overheating issues.
Zeiner, of Bath, reeled in Adams and the two raced door to door at a
non-stop pace. The duo exchanged the lead a couple of times before
Zeiner grabbed the race lead for good with 14 laps remaining.
He went on to take the checkers en route to his fourth win of the
season over Adams, Ross, Mike Skarbowski and Callavini.
Heat race winners were Jason Hearne, Barry Callavini and Mike
Skarbowski. Mike Speeney was the consi victor.
Double points were on the line for the 50-lap Street Stock main
event that was rescheduled from July 25.
Mike Shadder started from the pole and held the early lead over
Robert Fink, Steve Hoffman, Brad Barbush and Steve Clark.
Several cautions flew in the early going and Shadder held his line
on each restart and kept his car in front. His lead continued at the
halfway mark over Clark, B. Barbush, Richie DiMarco and Joe Barbush.
Following a lap 34 yellow, Clark edged Shadder for the race lead and
B. Barbush followed.
Although he fought a tight race car, Clark appeared to be on his way
to victory, but B. Barbush quickly closed in over the final laps. B’
Barbush completed the pass for the lead with a few laps remaining,
but that all went by the wayside when the caution flag waved. Being
that the lap was not complete at the time of the yellow, Clark
resumed command.
That set up a three-lap shootout for the finish. B. Barbush, of
Drums followed Clark and finally made the pass for the lead stick
while coming out of turn four on the final lap. Clark was forced to
settle for second, followed by DiMarco, Hoffman and Brian Wozniak.
Heat race winners from July 25 were Brad Barbush, Steve Clark and
Steve Hoffman. Chip Wanamaker was the consi winner.
The make up FWD from July 25 began with Eric Banashefski on the
pole. Jon Smith overtook Banashefski shortly after the green flag
flew and Ken Kleppinger followed into the runner up spot. Nikki
Sager and Robert Fink followed to round out the top five.
On a mission, Fink began to dispose of the competition ahead of him
and slipped by Banashefski for second on lap nine. Two laps later he
overtook Smith for the race lead.
Fink went on to take the checkers in the 20-lap contest, which was
his third win this season. Smith finished second, followed by
Banashefski, Sager and Brian Kunkel.
Heat race winners from July 25 were Robert Fink and Eric
Banashefski.
Before the first lap was scored, Chris Toole grabbed the early lead
from polesitter, Frank Katona in the regular 20-lap FWD feature.
Racing hard, the top five drivers jockeyed for position and it
appeared that anyone could visit victory lane before the event was
through.
Eric Banashefski overtook Toole for the lead on lap seven and began
to distance himself from the field. Nikki Sager held the runner up
spot with Jon Smith, Toole and Robert Fink in tow.
Smith powered by Sager for second with eight laps remaining and it
appeared that Banashefski was well on his way to his first career
victory. However, that changed with three laps remaining when his
car suddenly slowed for a moment while coming out of turn two with
three laps remaining.
Smith capitalized on the mishap and grabbed the top spot. He drove
off to the win, which was his third of the season over Banashefski,
Fink, Sager and Ken Kleppinger.
Heat race wins went to Frank Katona and Jon Smith.
The 20-lap INEX Legends make up feature from July 25 kicked off with
Jordon Adams on the pole. As the cars headed into turn one on the
opening lap, Greg Rittenhouse spun and collected Justin Grimm and
Scott Hubler.
Green flag racing resumed and Hubler, who restarted fourth, grabbed
the race lead. Zane Zeiner followed in second, followed by Karl
Heisler, Adams and Grimm.
Zeiner hounded Hubler for the race lead and overtook the leader on
lap seventeen. The duo ran side-by-side for a number of laps before
Hubler regained command on lap 20.
With a last ditch effort on the outside, Zeiner tried to retake the
lead and was unsuccessful.
Hubler won by a mere 0.006 of a second over Zeiner. Heisler, Grimm
and Adams completed the top five.
Double points were on the line for the 30-lap INEX Legends main
event and Karl Heisler led the opening laps after starting on the
pole.
Scott Hubler overtook Heisler for the race lead on lap six with Zane
Zeiner in hot pursuit. Heisler held third with Grimm and Rittenhouse
in the top five.
Like many times before, Zeiner caught Hubler and applied pressure to
the driver as the two raced side-by-side for many laps.
Zeiner took the race lead on lap ten and two laps later Hubler
regained command.
Zeiner retook the lead one lap later and went on to take his fourth
win of the season over Hubler, Heisler, Grimm and Adams.
