Dominic Ranieri, Sam Ryan and Woot Lawrence Take Mountain Madness Victories

By Gene Ostrowski
August 23, 2009

With only three starts this season, Sam Ryan of White Haven, PA visited victory lane for the third time after Mark Foreman failed post race inspection following the 4-cylinder portion of the ABC Car Crushing Mountain Madness Enduro Series event at Sundance Vacations Speedway on Sunday. For the first time this season someone besides Joe Jentile scored a victory in the 6/8-cylinder enduro. Dominic Ranieri of Long Island, NY barely beat Jentile to the stripe to score his first win of the season and Woot Lawrence of Long Island, NY visited victory lane for the first time this season in the exciting Trophy Truck enduro.

Following a six race win streak by Joe “Millionaire” Jentile, Mark Spencer, the series’ sponsor put up a $200 bounty to any driver who could beat Jentile for the win in the 100-lap 6/8 cylinder event. The only rule was that Jentile had to finish the race.

Bryan Kelly led the first lap of the 100-lap enduro before Woot Lawrence overtook him. Tom Szoke held the third spot, followed by Gregg Harris and Jentile.

TJ Kapish and Robin Schewire entered the top five. Meanwhile, Jentile wasted no time and drove into the race lead on lap 13.

Jentile appeared to be on his way at halfway and held a straightaway lead over Dominic Ranieri, Lawrence, Schewire and Kapish. However, as Jentile began to save his race car, Ranieri turned up the heat.

Ranieri began to turn laps that were a half second quicker than the leader, which enabled him to reel in Jentile. Ranieri drove underneath Jentile in turn four with 12 laps remaining to take the top spot.

Jentile fought back over the closing laps and crossed the finish line alongside Ranieri. The win was Ranieri’s first of the season, as he picked up the $200 bounty. Jentile settled for second, followed by Schewire, Kapish and Lawrence.

Mark Foreman started from the pole and set a blistering pace in the 100-lap 4-cylinder enduro. From the get-go, Sam Ryan scooted up to the second spot with Bill Rice, Bill Price, Jr. and Larry Spencer III in tow.

With Foreman and Ryan in command with 40 laps remaining, Price continued to hold second, followed by John Saccomandi and Jim White.

The only red flag of the day came when Dave Bartuski made contact with the turn three wall with eight laps remaining. Green flag racing resumed and Foreman crossed the strip first. However, Foreman failed post race tech and the win was awarded to Ryan. Price was the official runner-up, followed by Saccomandi, White and Denise Siegel. It was Siegel’s first top five of the season.

Gregg Harris grabbed the race lead when the green flag flew in the 30-lap Trophy Trucks enduro. Ryan Kelly held the second spot with Vince James, Christian Conklin and Woot Lawrence in pursuit.

Kelly overtook the race leader on lap five and Lawrence worked his way into the third spot. Meanwhile, Jeff Gregor, who won the last five straight events, cracked the top five.

Lawrence took command of the event on lap 12 and then surrendered the lead back to Kelly three laps later. With Gregor coming through the top five in a hurry, Lawrence regained the race lead on lap 16.

After a strong effort through out the event, Gregor hit the pits with a flat tire on lap 19.

With his first win of the season, Lawrence drove off to the victory over Kelly, Harris, James and Frank Katona.

The next “Mountain Madness” Enduro Series event will be held rain or shine on Sunday, September 20. For more information regarding the rules and regulations of enduro racing, plus the remainder of the racing schedule, please visit www.sundancevacationsspeedway.com.
