Jentile, Walls and Kelly Score Mountain Madness Victories at Sundance

With only one enduro event remaining on the schedule this season, Round no. 6 of the Mountain Madness Enduro Series kicked off Sunday at Sundance Vacations Speedway. Despite fluid on the speedway, Joe “Millionaire” Jentile of Bedminster stayed smooth and consistent to earn his fifth win of the season in 6/8-Cylinder action. Folsom’s Jeff Walls, a former enduro champion capitalized on Bill Price’s misfortune to snag the 4-Cylinder win and Brian Kelly of Long Island drove to his first Trophy Truck win at the speedway.

Keith Frankenfield brought the 6/8-cylinder field down to the drop of the green flag in the 100-lap enduro and Steve Tito quickly grabbed the race lead. James Presley grabbed the second spot with TJ Kapish and Bill Schwenck in pursuit.

Kapish made the pass for the lead stick on the second circuit and Presley moved into the runner up spot. Meanwhile, last place starter, Joe Jentile, overtook Dominic Ranieri and Robin Schewire to move into third.

Jentile disposed of Presley and set his sights on Kapish. With 21 laps complete, Jentile took command.

Jentile began to check out from the field as the top ten drivers jockeyed for positions over the first half of the event and with 50 laps complete he continued to lead over Schewire, Kapish, Ed Brown, Jr. and Schewire.

The battle for third heated up in the second half of the race when Kapish and Brown ran side by side for the third spot for more than 30 circuits.

Jentile remained out front and cruised to his fifth win of the season over Ranieri, Kapish, Brown and Schewire. Only the top two drivers were on the lead lap at the end of the event.

Brandon Brown started on the pole and lost the race lead to John Saccomandi on the first circuit of the 100-lap four-cylinder enduro. Bill Price, Jr. quickly climbed to third, followed by Mike Wahl and Jimmy White, Jr.

Price overtook Saccomandi for the lead with two laps complete and began to check out from the field. Meanwhile, Jeff Walls climbed to third and began to challenge for second. Lap after lap, Saccomandi and Walls ran side by side for the spot, as Tony Rispin and Jim White took it all in from their top five spots.

The top five remained the same when the cross flags flew and Price appeared to be on his way to an easy victory. That changed with 30 laps remaining when the leader began to lose power. Further back, Walls used a lap car to overtake the second position.

Running second at the time, Walls reeled in Price with 24 laps remaining and took the lead. Shortly after, Saccomandi got tangled up with a lapped car and lost second to Rispin.

Walls, a former big car enduro champion, drove off to his first four-cylinder victory at the speedway. Saccomandi overtook Rispin to finish second. With a tire going down, Rispin finished third, followed by White. Brown had a best career finish of fifth.

Only three Trophy Trucks took to the speedway for a 20-lap showdown, yet the competition was not disappointing. Jeff Gregor, a four-time winner this season started from the pole and lost the lead to Brian Kelly before a lap was complete. The three trucks stayed nose to tail throughout the event, with Gregor and Frank Katona swapping the second spot on several occasions.

Kelley took the win, which was the first of his career at the speedway. Katona edged out Gregor for second.

The upcoming “Halloween Screamer” is the last enduro of the season at the speedway. With double points, extended laps and a larger purse on the line, the action should heat up on November 1, 2009. Registrations for the Halloween Screamer are available at the track office, or they can be downloaded from the speedway website.
