Sundance’s Callavini ready and set to go in 2010
November 20, 2009
By: Sundance Vacations Speedway Management
With the annual speedway awards banquet
wrapping up another action packed year of racing at Joe
Callavini’s Sundance Vacations Speedway last weekend, the
veteran Promoter has never been so excited about the upcoming
racing season. 2010, marks Callavini’s eleventh season of
promoting asphalt stock car racing at the popular 1/3 mile oval
located in St. Johns, PA., which provides great entertainment,
without breaking the family budget.
Asphalt Modified racing has been the headline division at
the facility, since the 70s, when the Spencer family promoted
the speedway, then known as “Evergreen Speedway”. The new season
promises to be possibly the biggest to date for the mighty
Modifieds, as Callavini has raised the bar to new heights, by
announcing plans for no less than five, $5000-to-win events, for
the Tour Type Modifieds, in 2010.
“We love the Modifieds here in PA. There are probably as
many asphalt Modified race cars and drivers in this area, as
there are anywhere.”, Callavini stated. “They deserve the
recognition, and we are going to make sure they get it. Modified
fans are going to benefit, as well. It’s a win-win for
everyone!” Callavini added.
Another division that Sundance will be looking at over the
winter months is the Legends cars. The speedway is considering
running an outlaw Legends class, on Hoosier tires. The Hoosier
790 13-inch tire is the same tire that the FWD cars utilize, at
the speedway.
“The Hoosier 790 is a great all around tire for an entry
level class, like the Legends cars.”, said Callavini.
The Legends would run INEX rules, with the exception of
tires, and no INEX license would be required. A point fund would
also be in place, as it was for 2009.
Micro Sprints, which are highly popular on dirt in this
area, have also shown interest in running an Asphalt series at
the track, for 2010. Many of these drivers compete on Friday
evenings at various tracks and could possibly run a limited
schedule of events for the new season. Both the 600 and 250 cc
Micros, would be welcome to compete. A rules meeting is planned
for the near future.
The 2010 racing season gets underway on Saturday, January
2, with the running of the Frostbite 4(degree) Enduro event. New
for 2010, is a separate six-cylinder car/truck division, to
compliment the four-cylinder and eight cylinder Enduro
divisions. Enduro cars that compete on Dirt at tracks such as
Big Diamond and Grandview raceways, are encouraged to
participate in the Mountain Madness Enduro Series. The 2nd
event for the series is already on the calendar for February 27,
with the remaining schedule to be announced. An Enduro series
sponsor is also being sought for 2010.
The full schedule for all racing divisions is expected to
be similar to the 2009 schedule, with all divisions competing on
a bi-weekly basis. This proved to be popular with many of the
racers by keeping costs down in a struggling economy. It also
made each event that much more important, and it showed in car
counts with increases in all divisions. The Sport Modified
division will headline the “B” program, once again in 2010, as
the division has grown rapidly in just a few short years.
Sundance Vacations Speedway staff would like to wish
everyone a Happy and Safe Holiday season. Stay tuned to the
