Dale Fey Found Early Success at Mountain Speedway

By Gene Ostrowski

Many remember 1990 for a different President Bush and the war in the Persian Gulf, but that year there was quite the battle taking place in the street stock division at Mountain Speedway. The sole victor in this suspenseful duel was none other than the champion, Dale Fey.

Mountaintop's Dale Fey began racing in '88 when he built a street stock to run occasionally at Mountain and Selinsgrove Speedways. Gaining experience and track time was what Dale wanted and achieved. Running occasionally became constantly, and by the end of the year Dale was among the front-runners. Bu this time, he had already won twice. The most memorable win that season was the Pocono Race of Champions qualifier. By winning that feature, Fey was automatically entered in the areas most prestigious event.

1990 was something out of a storybook as the Mountain Speedway fans witnessed a torrid battle between Dale and Steve Clark from Freeland. Clark held the point lead most of the season, with Fey always close behind in second. Week in and week out it seemed like either of the racers could win the feature, and the pair finished one-two on several occasions. By the seasons end, Dale captured the title in his familiar #3, mimicking the legendary Dale Earnhardt Sr.'s car and number. Fey had that drive and passion that took both Dales to the championship crown that season.

With the taste of success, Dale climbed into a small block modified for the '91 season. Although he had a few strong runs, the money just wasn't in place for Fey to compete at the level he strived for. By the end of the season, Dale went back to racing part-time in other divisions.

Throughout the rest of the 90's Dale ran a limited schedule in multiple classes. While he still had his modified, Dale was saving money for a competitive engine combination and often ran the street stock and pro stock divisions in a number of cars. "Probably the most success we've seen those last years of the 90's was winning a late model feature in 1999, ending a long winless drought" explained Fey.

Once the millennium rolled around Dale was still back at the track competing from time to time, allowing him to get his racing fix. Success was back on his side, and Fey was finally back on track. It seemed like finishing in the runner-up spot was becoming the norm in the early part of '01, but by '02 Fey would cruise to another late model victory.

Although Dale ran a number of tracks in '03 and '04, he still plans to compete occasionally in the late model division at Mountain Speedway. When asked about his next win, Dale's reply was "Winning isn't everything, but it sure is fun to win. If you ain't planning to have fun, keep it on the trailer."
